Requesting suggestions for the 2022 Canadian Atheist Awards

by | January 10, 2022

I know many of you have been waiting for this, and very concerned that pandemic would prevent it from happening. Well, worry no more: it’s award season again, and that means the 5th annual Canadian Atheist awards are just around the corner!

What are the Canadian Atheist awards?

For those who don’t know, the Canadian Atheist awards is something I’ve been doing every year since 2018. It’s a completely informal affair, just for fun. There are no prizes; even the statuette is just a 3D render I put together. There really isn’t even much in the way of bragging rights; the CA awards may be the most prestigious awards on Canadian Atheist… but that’s not saying much.

Still, the awards are a great way to recognize the people who really made things better for Canadian atheists in the past year. As I’ve said before, the award may be worthless, but the recipients are priceless.

The award categories vary from year-to-year, though the Person of the Year award is always given. Past categories have included:

  • Person of the Year: awarded every year
  • Story of the Year: awarded every year
  • Art, entertainment, or culture story of the Year: 2018, 2019
  • Podcast or show of the year: 2020

You can take a look at the past awards, to see what they look like:

Requesting suggestions

It’s still a few weeks until the nominations, and a few weeks beyond that until the actual award announcements. For now, what I’d like is for readers to offer suggestions for nominees and awards. What I’m looking for is:

Categories

While there will definitely be both a Person of the Year and Story of the Year award, I’m not sure whether there will be any other categories. In years past, I’ve generally tried to do three categories, but last year the pandemic so flooded every aspect of our lives, there wasn’t really much else to talk about. I think the same is true this year, but if anyone has any suggestions for an interesting third (or fourth!) category, please go ahead and suggest it.

One important thing to mention: I am not interested in negative categories. There will be no “asshole of the year” category, no matter how many deserving candidates. The point of these awards is to celebrate us, Canadian atheists. They should be about the best of us.

Silly and absurd categories, however, are definitely welcome.

Nominees

Naturally, I’m happy to accept suggestions for nominees, in any category, even ones that are unlikely to exist. Even if you make a suggestion for a category that doesn’t exist, they might still work in another.

If you do make a suggestion, please explain why you think they deserve an award. That will help a lot; saves me a lot of running around figuring out who people are or what they’ve done.

How to make a suggestion

The easiest way to make a suggestion is simply to leave a comment below. The second easiest way is to use the contact form.

There are plenty of other ways to get in touch with us, though. You could email us, you could reach out to us on Twitter… pretty much anything that gets our attention would work. Hell, you could even send us an actual, physical, paper letter via Canada Post if you’re feeling particularly masochistic. Just be warned that the more distant and exotic the method of contact you choose to use, the more likely that it won’t catch our attention until too late!
