Spend the holidays listening to prayers… for science!

by | December 18, 2018

Whatever you celebrate (or don’t) around this time of year, things tend to quiet down, meaning everyone has a bit more time to relax.

If you’re the type who likes to keep busy or is looking for something to do to get away from the family debates about religion and politics, why not listen to a bunch of BC MLAs pray?

The BC Humanist Association is working on a crowdsource research project to transcribe 15 years of prayers said in our province’s legislature. From this database we’ll hopefully be able to do some analysis to see whether these statements reflect the religious diversity of the province.

You can sign up to help here.

Each prayer is pretty short, just a couple minutes, so you can crank through five or more in an hour.

And that prayer at the top is one example we already found from October 2003. Most aren’t so explicitly Christian but we won’t know until we’ve analyzed more of them.

Ian Bushfield is Executive Director of the BC Humanist Association.
