How to submit to Weekly Update

by | September 10, 2016

Weekly Update is a recurring feature on Canadian Atheist, giving weekly updates about anything that might be of interest to Canadian secularists, humanists, atheists, and freethinkers.

What is Weekly Update?

Every week the heretics at CA will collect a list of items found around the Internet that might be of interest to Canadian secularists, humanists, atheists, and freethinkers. That will obviously include items directly related to Canadian SHAFT, but it will also include science topics, political news, and other stuff that Canadian secularists, humanists, atheists, and freethinkers might find interesting or amusing.

Each week’s update will be published (hopefully) early Saturday morning, nominally covering the events of the previous week (Saturday previous to Friday)… but of course anything missed in previous updates will be added to the current one.

You can always find the latest Weekly Update at the top of the list at https://www.canadianatheist.com/category/features/weekly-update/.

And here’s a tip: If you want to follow Weekly Update, simply use the URL https://www.canadianatheist.com/category/features/weekly-update/feed/ in your favourite RSS feed reader (or https://www.canadianatheist.com/category/features/weekly-update/feed/atom/ if your feed reader supports Atom), to receive every week’s update automatically.

Submitting items to Weekly Update

If you find anything on the Internet that you think might be of interest to Canadian secularists, humanists, atheists, and freethinkers, why not take a moment to submit that item to Weekly Update?

It can be anything: a news article, a blog post, a meme, a picture, a comic, an event, or even just something you think should be brought to the attention of Canadian secularists, humanists, atheists, or freethinkers.

It’s very easy to do now; you have five options, with more likely being added in the future:

  • use the submission form below;
  • leave a comment on this post, or on any Weekly Update post;
  • use Facebook;
  • use Twitter;
  • use Google+;
  • use GNU Social;
  • use diaspora*; or
  • use IRC.

You can submit an item anonymously, if you prefer, or you can supply a name – and optionally a URL – that will be credited.

Not everything submitted will actually make it on to a weekly update, of course. It might not, for example, if the link to Canadian SHAFT is too tenuous and there’s already a bunch of more relevant stuff.

Also keep in mind that even if you submit an item that gets used, you might not get credit for it if someone else submitted it before you.

Submission form

    Submitter information

    Note: If you want to be credited for your submission, you must supply at least a name below. If you also supply a URL (or email, if you prefer), it will be used as well (so you can link back to your own site or blog or whatever).

    If you want to submit anonymously, just leave the next two fields blank. Do not supply a name below if you do not want to be credited. Do not supply a URL unless you want it to be associated with your name.

    (optional)
    Submission terms

    By submitting anything with this form, you are implying that you own the rights to the text you type in the fields above, and are giving Canadian Atheist the freedom to use or republish it as we please.

    Check here if you accept these terms.

    Comments

    You can leave a submission in a comment on just about any Canadian Atheist post.

    Just keep in mind that if you leave a submission on any post other than this one or the latest Weekly Update, it might not be noticed.

    Also, it’s important that you clearly state that you’re making a submission, otherwise it might not get recognized as one.

    Finally, unless you explicitly state otherwise, the name and URL you use when commenting will be given credit in the Weekly Update.

    So if you want to submit a Weekly Update item via comment on this blog:

    • leave your comment on a relevant post – the best choice is either this post or the latest Weekly Update;
    • clearly state that you want this to be a Weekly Update submission; and
    • if you don’t want to be credited, clearly say so.

    Facebook

    You can send any story to our attention via our Facebook page.

    Make sure you clearly note that you’re making a submission, and if you don’t want your Facebook identity credited, make sure you explicitly say so (you can also offer an alternative name/URL to credit, too).

    Twitter

    You can send any story to our attention @CanAtheist.

    Make sure you clearly note that you’re making a submission – an obvious hash tag (like #WeeklyUpdate) would suffice – and if you don’t want your Twitter identity credited, make sure you explicitly say so (you can also offer an alternative name/URL to credit, too).

    Google+

    You can send any story to our attention via our Google+ page.

    Make sure you clearly note that you’re making a submission, and if you don’t want your Google+ identity credited, make sure you explicitly say so (you can also offer an alternative name/URL to credit, too).

    GNU Social

    The GNU Social network is similar to Twitter, except not as restricted. If you are on a GNU Social federated service (which includes Mastodon, if you use that), you can send a submission to indi@quitter.se (that is not an email address, by the way, so don’t try sending email to it).

    Make sure you clearly note that you’re making a submission – an obvious hash tag would suffice (like #WeeklyUpdate) – and if you don’t want your GNU Social identity credited, make sure you explicitly say so (you can also offer an alternative name/URL to credit, too).

    diaspora*

    The diasprora* social network is similar to Facebook or Google+, except more private and not as restricted as either. If you are on any diaspora* hub or any diaspora* federated service, you can send a submission to indi@joindiaspora.com (again, that is not an email address, so don’t bother trying to send email to it).

    Make sure you clearly note that you’re making a submission – an obvious hash tag would suffice – and if you don’t want your diaspora* identity credited, make sure you explicitly say so (you can also offer an alternative name/URL to credit, too).

    IRC

    If you use Internet Relay Chat, you can make a submission that way.

    Connect to the Rizon IRC network via ircs://irc.rizon.net/, then look for the nick indi (you should verify that whoever is using the indi nick has identified to NickServ, to confirm that it really is me). The easiest way to find me would probably be to join my own channel: #indi.

    As always, make sure you clearly state that you are making a Weekly Update submission, and whether and how you would like to be credited for it.

    The quality and usefulness of the weekly updates will depend heavily on how much readers like you put into it. Between blog itself and all the feeds alone (not counting people who follow us on other services like Facebook and Twitter), we get almost a half-million visits a month. If even just 10% of our readers submitted just one item a year there would always be tons of items in the weekly update every week. Anything you happen to stumble across on the web that you think might be of interest to Canadian Atheist readers, all it takes is just a few seconds to leave a comment with the link.

      Sounds fantastic – and I’ll no doubt have tons of things to share. The biggest issue for me will be remembering to share things. I know you’re pretty connected, so perhaps just make sure the bchumanist.ca RSS feeds are in your reader so you see the latest each week?

        Ah, I actually didn’t have BCHA in my feeds list! I have over two dozen Canadian organizations – not just things like CFIC and CSA, but also things like Human Rights Watch Canada and the Council of Canadians – but I admit there’s a heavy Ontario bias in what I have (and particularly, a heavy Toronto bias).

        So hey, anyone else out there from any other major Canadian secularist, humanist, atheist, or freethought organizations: you can get free signal-boosting for all your updates *while* saving yourself the hassle of having to remember to manually send out updates by just dropping a note here!
