Samuel Taylor Coleridge ‘s poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, is the source of the phrase “an albatross around one’s neck,” a metaphor for an encumbrance or a burden. Jerry Coyne used The Albatross as a working title for a book he was writing.
It is no longer necessary for Coyne or readers of Coyne’s website, Why Evolution Is True, to refer to Coyne’s book as The Albatross; Coynes latest book is written, and has a title and a publication date:
