Immigration Victory Is Not a Miracle

by | June 12, 2014

The headlines for human interest stories are often hyperbolic or indicate supernatural intervention. The headline1 in the paper edition of the Peterborough Examiner, “Miracle Unites Couple,” is no exception.

It looked as though he wouldn’t be allowed to leave his home country of Bangladesh and get to Canada in time for the birth of his first child, a son.

His wife, nine months pregnant, set up the nursery in their apartment in East City and hoped for the best – although she prepared for the worst.

She never thought he’d make it. But then a miracle happened.

Roman Mahmud got news last week that after more than four years of long-distance romance, the paperwork was done. He could leave Bangladesh and come to Canada for good.

He arrives as a landed immigrant today – Thursday – just two days before Father’s Day and five days before his wife, Marina Wilke, 26, is due to give birth. (My Emphasis)

Marina Wilke and Roman Mahmud applied for spousal sponsorship in the summer of 2012; it can take up to three years for spousal sponsorship to be approved, However, because of successful intervention from Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro’s office, Roman Mahmud arrives in Peterborough today.

The Peterborough Examiner headline says Roman Mahmud’s expedited Immigration & Citizenship approval is a “miracle,” but Wilke has a rational explanation:

“Someone had compassion.”

No,  it was not a miracle; rather it was compassion and efficiency on the part of  Immigration & Citizenship Canada that ensured that Mahmud would arrive in Canada in time for the birth of his first child.

__________

1 The headline in the online version of the article does not mention “miracle.”

It’s a Miracle that the words “Compassion” and “efficiency” were used to describe Immigration & Citizenship Canada.

Sadly, it’s not even that. This was not an act of compassion. If the name isn’t familiar to you, Del Mastro is the guy who was busted by Elections Canada for fraud and is looking at five years in prison. When the Conservative Party threw him under the bus he turned into a crusader for the little guy, taking on humane causes that the regular Conservative Party won’t touch, likely in the hopes of drumming up enough public support that he’ll be able to get off with a light sentence. This is probably just part of that strategy.

I am not a fan of Del Mastro; I live in Peterborough and he is an embarrassment.
