Prehistoric Creature: Tiktaalik

Meet Tiktaalik roseae: an extraordinary fossil fish

Tiktaalik roseae, better known as the “fishapod,” is a 375 million year old fossil fish which was discovered in the Canadian Arctic in 2004. Its discovery sheds light on a pivotal point in the history of life on Earth: when the very first fish ventured out onto land.

The Royal Canadian Mint is offering a glow-in-the-dark coin to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Tiktaalik’s discovery in the Canadian Arctic:

TikIt’s great to see the Royal Canadian Mint celebrating science and scientific discovery.

  1. I think the image on the coin is already out of date. It was recently determined that the hind limbs are actually large, with the pelvic girdle as wide as the shoulders. Before this, it was assumed the hind limbs were small.

This was recently determined from the original specimens. It just takes a *long* time to do this kind of work.

  2. What with the creationists infesting our federal government, I’m surprised this is going onto something of federal responsibility.

  3. I ordered this awesome coin as soon as I got the email from the Mint that it was available. I have all the others & I was anxiously awaiting the update. I can’t wait to get it!
